Apex is serious about controlling water pollution. The town already had state-required buffers in place for waterways flowing through one-third of the land around water basins. Now the town has extended these requirements to the whole town, as well as its extraterritorial jurisdiction.

In 1996, the General Assembly created the N.C. Clean Water Management Trust Fund to deal with water pollution. The fund provides grants to groups for such projects as the restoration of degraded lands and building of riparian buffers.

Abstract:
The cities of Archdale and Durham were named the inaugural winners of the Susan M. Burgess Sustainability Awards. The award, which was established in 2010, will be an annual award recognizing efforts to lessen the environmental impact of municipal operations and to promote and encourage sustainability throughout the community.

Asheville was one of nine cities honored with the prestigious 2006 Awards for Municipal Excellence at the National League of Cities' Congress of Cities in Reno, Nevada, on December 8, 2006. The award recognizes cities that improve the quality of life in their communities. Asheville was the Gold winner in the 50,501-150,000 population category for its “Cultural Renaissance Arts Program.” This innovative summer and after-school arts and humanities program focuses on young people ages 8-15 and provides a platform to address social issues through theatrical productions, visual arts exhibits and dance recitals.

Abstract:
The Asheville Parks and Recreation Department has received the 2002 Gold Medal Award from the National Sporting Goods Foundation. The annual award is presented to this particular department in cities of 50,000 to 100,000 for positively affecting their citizens across the board and maintaining a level of excellence.

Housing North Carolina Awards recognize affordable housing developments that can serve as models for other communities. Criteria include affordability, design, contribution to the community, and other features, such as services for residents. The winners are Choanoke Area Development Association of North Carolina, Inc. (Rich Square); Allison Summit (Statesville); Gateway Village (Gastonia); Tanglewood and Bermuda Run Apartments (Warsaw); Hunters Hill (Winston-Salem); and My Sister Susan's House (Greensboro).

Belhaven, located in Beaufort County, was struck by six hurricanes in the late 1990s. Flood waters four-feet-deep devastated numerous homes. To combat this, Belhaven is elevating homes off their foundations. Lail discusses this FEMA mitigation project which has drawn nationwide attention. Officials from as far away as South Korea have come to see what has been done.
