The Brady C. Jefcoat Museum in Murfreesboro, North Carolina displays the collection of Brady Jefcoat. There are more than 16,000 items in the collection, some dating back to the Great Depression. Most of the artifacts are old household items like washing machines, radios, and plumbing hardware.

When Hurricane Isabel blew the water out of the Cashie River in Bertie County in 2003, the remains of a large wooden ship were visible. Photographs were sent to the Underwater Archaeology Department at East Carolina University and researchers spent two seasons working on the wreck in 2009 and 2010. Fueston describes some of their findings.

On his tour through North Carolina, Marquis de Lafayette spent the night of Feb. 26, 1825 in Murfreesboro. At the time, residents had planned a ball in his honor. However, he arrived in town after the event. In the 1970s, the Murfreesboro Historical Association began a decades long series of balls commemorating the one missed by Lafayette.

Gatesville was home to North Carolina's former legendary Secretary of State, Thad Eure. Originally called Gates Courthouse, the name was changed in 1831 to Gatesville. The current Gates County courthouse was built in 1836.

Dr. Christopher White, a Georgia native, holds a BA in Mathematics and English from Mercer University; Master of Divinity degree from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary; and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in religion from Emory University. He was the first US citizen to be awarded the honorary Doctorate of Musical Arts from the prestigious Moscow State Conservatory of Music in Russia for his support of music and the arts in higher education. He left Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, NC as president and founder of M. Christopher White School of Divinity and came to Chowan College in 2003. He began a campaign to turn Chowan College around, make it successful and eventually getting it named Chowan University.

Roanoke River Partners (RRP) incorporated in 1997 to connect the towns and five counties along the river in northeastern North Carolina, capitalizing on the region's natural and cultural assets as a source for new enterprise. April 2017 marks its 20th anniversary. The nonprofit's signature achievement has been the development and promotion of the 200 mile 'Roanoke River Water Trail' featuring 16 rustic camp sites and river platforms, most accessible only by kayak, canoe or small boats. RRP has also spearheaded the preservation of the former Hamilton Colored school and repurpose it into the Rosenwald River Center.
