Thomas Built Buses was founded in 1916 by Perley A. Thomas in High Point. Thomas was working for the Southern Car Company, and when that company went out of business, he started his own streetcar company. When streetcar use declined, he moved into the manufacture of buses. Today his grandson, John W. Thomas, Jr., is chairman, president, and CEO of the company, which turns out about fifty buses a day. Thomas is profiled in NORTH CAROLINA magazine's “executive profile.”

Thomas Built Buses, Inc., started in High Point in 1916 as a maker of streetcars. In 1936, the company began building buses and today is the world's largest school bus manufacturer. In August 2004, the company opened a new, $39.7 million plant. When operating at full capacity in 2005, experts expect it to produce about forty-four school buses a day.

In a typical year the company produces and sells between 9,000 and 10,000 units. John W. Thomas, Jr., grandson of the founder, is company president.
