Charlotte lost its professional basketball team in 2002. The next year, Robert L. Johnson, founder and CEO of the Black Entertainment Network (BET), purchased a franchise for a new team for $300 million. He named Ed Tapscott to be president of Bobcat Basketball Holdings, which includes the new Charlotte Bobcats team, the Charlotte Sting of the Women's National Basketball Association, operation of the new arena, and the new Carolinas Sports Entertainment Television.
