Abstract:
Shad fishing was a time honored activity. Beginning as early as March, men would head to Elizabethtown, to fish for shad spawning in the Cape Fear River. This pastime involved men who both fished and ate shad, though, later in the season this ritual was opened up to larger communities.

Shad fishing is a popular spring sport in North Carolina. Hickory shad can be found in slow moving, cypress-lined backwater streams. Recommended fishing sites are the Cape Fear and Roanoke River drainages.
