Abstract:
The bay scallop is found in only two Southeastern states -North Carolina and Florida-because it lives in seagrass beds. To protect its habitat, found mostly in Bogue and Core sounds, the state since the 1970s has closed these beds to mechanical harvesting. In 1997, 63,800 pounds were harvested, the largest harvest on the East Coast.

Abstract:
In 1928, North Carolina led the country in bay scallop production with a harvest of 1.4 million pounds of meat. However, by 2004 the harvest was down to 150 pounds. Lamontagne discusses reasons for the decline and what is being done to help the scallop fishery recover.

Abstract:
For North Carolina fishermen, 1980 has been a lucrative years for the harvesting of calico scallops. But 1980 also marks the first year this species has been seen in the state since 1973. With its sporadic return, this mystery mollusk incites excitement within the industry.
