Abstract:
Printing is one of North Carolina's largest industries with over nine hundred companies around the state. Arts Engraving Company is the largest of them and also the largest photoprinter between Washington and Atlanta. W. L. Plemmons, Jr. founded the company in Charlotte in the winter of 1947-1948.

Duncan-Parnell, Inc. was founded in Charlotte by Charles W. Duncan in 1946 to supply high quality equipment, supplies and printing services to engineers, architects, designers and surveyors. Duncan is a pioneer in what is now known as reprographics, the combination of drafting graphics and photographic reproduction. Edward F. Parnell, a manufacturing engineer, joined the firm as manager in 1960.
