Abstract:
Durwood Barbour of Raleigh collects postcards that feature long-forgotten scenes from around the state. He spent twenty-five searching through large and small towns to build his collection which numbers 8,000 cards. In 2006, he donated his collection, which is valued at $200,000, to the Wilson Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

One source of Michael Forster’s reputation is postcards, currently over 30,000, which does not includes ones he donated to a U.S. government project. The other is trains, which does not include the 1,000 plus repaired trains he has given away as Christmas gifts to local charities.

This article is accompaniment to Morgan Banville’s “A Collection of Giving.” It focuses on Michael Forster’s collection of over 30,000 postcards, started by ones his father gave to him. It includes Rep. Walter B. Jones Jr.’s role in 2,000 postcards donated to a U.S. Government project about the Statue of Liberty.
