While textiles and furniture have dominated North Carolina's manufacturing scene for decades, a new industry is emerging--plastics. The state ranks seventh nationally in shipments sent by plastics manufacturing companies and eighth in the number of people employed in the industry.

Recycling plastic bottles creates jobs for North Carolinians. Several recycling centers across the state turn old bottles into fabric fibers. The fibers can be used for a variety of products including t-shirts and car seat covers. The bottles are in such high demand that the Carolinas Plastics Recycling Council has started a campaign to increase the recycling of plastic bottles to support local manufacturers and businesses.

Community colleges, traditionally considered a second rate form of higher education, is increasingly making a first grade contribution to the state’s economy and work force. North Carolina’s fifty-eight community colleges are proving themselves an asset for fields such as biotechnology, welding, law enforcement, aviation, and manufacturing.
