Frederick Augustus Olds was born in Pitt County in 1853. A graduate of the Virginia Military Institute, Olds was made a colonel when he joined the staff of Gov. Zebulon Vance in 1877. Olds was a newspaper columnist, lecturer, editor, and historian. His greatest contribution to the state was the founding of the State Hall of History in 1887. He donated his collection of historical documents and relics and collected over 35,000 more pieces of North Carolina history. During his tenure, he escorted more than 300,000 visitors.

Colonel Fred A. Olds, resident of Raleigh, was a newspaper man, Chamber of Commerce worker, North Carolina tour guide, North Carolina historian, and the former of youth organizations. He is credited with donating the more than 20,000 items that made up the initial collection of the North Carolina Hall of History, established in 1902. He is said to have personally escorted more than 300,000 persons on sightseeing tours around Raleigh.

This article provides a personal biography of Colonel F.A. Olds of Raleigh. Colonel Olds began collecting artifacts of historical significance to the state of North Carolina in the late 1870s and since 1902 has given a large amount of time and effort to the Hall of History in Raleigh, North Carolina. He has also spent a significant portion of his life writing and recording the history of North Carolina.

Fred A. Olds (1847-1935) son of Lewis Poindexter Olds and Pauline E. Evans, began his career as a newspaper man in Raleigh, NC and was a colonel in the State Guard. He created the State Hall of History in 1914. The State Hall of History collection later became the North Carolina Division of Archives and History. Olds died July 2, 1935, at Dorthea Dix Hospital.

Fred Olds, a previous insurance agent and newspaper editor, began working in the 1880s and 90s for the creation of a North Carolina historical museum. In 1902, the "Hall of History" openned its doors in the Agriculture Building in Raleigh.
