In this continuing series of articles on the various departments of North Carolina state government, Sadler discusses the Department of Agriculture. Established by the General Assembly in 1877, it is one of North Carolina's oldest administrative branches. The Commissioner of Agriculture is an elected, not an appointed, position. William A. Graham is the current Commissioner.

Abstract:
The Department of Weights and Measures is part of The State Department of Agriculture and in 1937 was responsible for approving weighing devices and monitoring for any fraudulent activity. At that time, the department consisted of a superintendent, two state inspectors, and a series of local departments across the state.

Abstract:
Despite advertising claims made by oil companies, all gasoline brands sold in North Carolina must meet state standards. North Carolina is one of only eleven states which has fixed minimum standards for gasoline. The North Carolina Agriculture Department’s Gasoline and Oil Division ensures that these standards are met, to protect the consumer and legitimate businessman from financial loss and danger.

The North Carolina Department of Agriculture administers service and regulatory programs for farmers, as well as a variety of other consumer products. The Department’s broad inspection powers, laws and regulations are meant to protect consumers, and to ensure safe and quality products. Inspections include all items of food or drink for man or animals, as well as gasoline and oil.
