Leggett presents her Top 10 list of people who are preserving the culture and sense of place that years from now will allow people to say \"I'm from Down East,\" and have it mean something. Included are Mamie's Drive-in in Laurel Hill, Pete Jones Eastern-style barbecue in Ayden, and Ashley Futrell and Hoover Adams, who continue the tradition of the locally owned, rural newspaper in Little Washington and in Dunn.

Oyster season in eastern North Carolina runs from October 15 through March 31. People who harvest the oysters are called oystermen and they follow a specific process and use similar equipment no matter if they are harvesting commercially or independently. This article details this process and highlights the health benefits of oysters for humans.
