David McKnight is an influential musician and former journalist also known as the Franklin Street Fiddler, the Mayor of Ninth Street, or Hillsborough Street’s Handel. McKnight was recently diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor, giving him little time to live. This week musicians gathered in Durham to pay tribute to McKnight.

Raund Haus is a group of instrumental hip-hop and electronic beat makers Durham. They play at a small venue called The Shed, and recently launched their own record label. As Raund Haus gains popularity, Durham is becoming a burgeoning hub for experimental electronic music.

J. Gunn is a rapper and BET Music Matters artist from Durham. Gunn wants to create a Durham dynasty out of his rap talents by partnering with Dame Dash, the dynasty maker who cofounded Roc-A-Fella Records with Jay Z. He aspires to use his rapping platform to fight some of the injustices of the world and to preserve the integrity of downtown’s Black Wall Street legacy.

Musician, composer, studio owner, and engineer, Durham native Willie Hill has been creating music since his early teens. His music is strongly melodic, rhythmically intricate, and atmospheric. He took up the guitar when he was twelve years old and got his first gig when he was fifteen. At nineteen he was playing with The Communicators. He wrote “One Chance,” which was a hit single for the group in 1974 and later started his own record label, Joy Records, in 1984. Hill discusses his life and his music.
