Constructed in 1929 as the home of industrialist James G. Hanes, the house has served the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art since 1977 as a visitors center and gathering spot. It is currently being reimaged to serve programming for today's visitors. The Hanes House is located on 750 Marguerite Drive in Winston-Salem

The Museum of Early Southern Decoration Arts, located in Winston-Salem, contained rooms and galleries with furniture and decorations from the Colonial to Victorian periods. The author noted each space represented Southern craftsmanship, taste, and culture from such historic eras.

The Winston-Salem Nature Science Center, Incorporated has created a nature-lovers museum, generating a learning environment for natural history and physical sciences. North Carolina's state government constructed the museum in a converted baron the Reynolda Estate in Wake Forest. The Winston-Salem Nature Science Center uses volunteer assistant curators.

The Old Salem Toy Museum in Winston-Salem was founded in 2002 by Tom Gray and his mother, Anne Gray. The museum is housed in the Frank L. Horton Museum Center, and the thousands of toys in the collection span a period of 1,700 years. One of the rare items in the museum is a paint set George Washington gave his step-granddaughter in 1793 for her fourteenth birthday. Gray had to outbid the staff at Mount Vernon for the toy.

Prunkl discusses the Toy Museum at Old Salem in Winston-Salem. The museum, the vision of Tom Gray and his mother, Anne Gray, opened in November 2002. The Grays donated their 4,000-piece toy collection, with items dating from 225 A.D. to 1925, for auction. The $250,000 raised purchased 95 percent of the museum's collection, which features toys children played with from the state's earliest settlements to the early 20th century.
