Employment benefits offered by the profiled thirty four companies, ranged from small to large, included mentorships, child and pet friendly policies, free dental care, flexible work scheduling, tuition reimbursement up to $5,000, paid volunteer days, and all-expense paid trips for top performers. Profiled companies included Hill, Chesson, and Woody; N2 Publishing; Practicon; CCS Construction Staffing; Insperity; Williams Mullen; Alston and Bird LLP; and CPI Security.

Last summer, nine youths from the North Carolina Youth Conservation Corps helped to clear forest trails in Uwharrie National Forest near Asheboro. NCYCC crews have put in hundreds of hours to improve and expand access to North Carolina’s protected natural areas since the program was created in 2013. The program also mentors youth, focusing especially on those who are neither in school nor working through the Opportunity Youth Service Initiatives. The benefits the group provides the state and the positive work the group has done for its youth are detailed.

In 2010, Orange County, North Carolina lawyer Jay Bryan launched a voluntary mentoring program to pair recent law school graduates with more senior lawyers in order to develop skills, professionalism, and ethics for the recent grads, while allowing experienced lawyers to give back to the community.

The National High School Mock Trial Championship will again be held in North Carolina in May 2015. The civic education tradition of high school mock trials have provided high school students with unique opportunities to learn about the justice system through examination of real-world situational cases and interaction with legal professionals.

Durham’s mentoring program Durham Companions’ recent history is detailed. The group has experienced some poor leadership lately and was in threat of being defunded. The group has a strong history of mentoring troubled youth in an attempt to increase school attendance and reduce juvenile crime. Funding has been cut by the state, but after some criticism by Durham’s county commissioners, the group will continue to receive funding and mentor youth.

Bo Lozoff is the founder of Kindness House and former director of the Human Kindness Foundation. The foundation practiced interfaith prison ministry and the Kindness House was an spiritual living community for parolees. Lozoff is facing allegations that he sexually abused former program volunteers and parolees and bullied and intimidated other community members. Former volunteers, parolees, Lozoff, Departments of Corrections, and religious studies experts are interviewed and talk about the allegations. Lozoff has decided to close the parole program due to his unconventional sexual behavior, but is still mentoring inmates and actively ministering.
