Abstract:

Civil rights advocate Floyd B. McKissick, Sr. used his legal skills to assist those less fortunate. A director of the Congress of Racial Equality, he was a founder of Soul City in Warren County, and later served as a district judge until his death in 1991.

Abstract:

This article looks at civil rights activist Floyd B. McKissick and his efforts to establish Soul City in rural Warren County, North Carolina in 1973. Soul City was an interracial community and the first new town planned by a minority developer. Soul City's remoteness made it difficult to attract residents, business, and industry though and the town was foreclosed by the Department of Housing and Urban Development in 1979.

Thomas Healy's new book "Soul City, Race, Equity and the Lost Dream of an American Utopia" traces Floyd McKissick's efforts to establish a specail community in rural northeaster North Carolina. Healy is a Charlotte native and law professor at Seton Hall University.
