Bob Jackson of Cary is senior vice president and general manager of McDonald Corporation's Raleigh Region. He oversees 665 restaurants and 32,000 employees in a region that stretches from Kentucky to Georgia and from Tennessee east to the Atlantic Ocean. McDonald's Corporation is divided into eight regions nationwide. Since 2003, the Raleigh Region has ranked in the top three in sales and customers. Sales for 2004 were over $1 billion, and each restaurant in the region served over 500,000 customers.

McDonald's commemorated its 30th anniversary in downtown Raleigh by renovating an old movie theater into one of its signature fast food restaurants. Architects from Wilmington and Raleigh had an unlimited budget to use the existing 1920s theater on Hillsborough Street and combine it with a 1950s diner vibe to create the new restaurant.

Corporations like McDonalds were moving from small towns and cities alike a staple of a time gone by: mom and pop restaurants. Then came the Shakedown, leaving many franchise owners unable to keep open what was commonly a side business. The Shakedown was defined by money—lots of it. Hardees, with an alternative recipe for success—relying on corporations, not moms and pops, for franchisees—weathered the Shakedown storm.
