The Fayetteville Observer was sold to a NY based company who owned nine other North Carolina newspapers. The latest sellout leaves only three locally owned and operated newspapers in the state. Such a trend leaves experts concerned about the future of already struggling journalism business.

Abstract:
During the 1996 election season, North Carolina news media conducted a study to see if a new type of journalism, public journalism, could revive interest in politics. According to UNC professors, public journalism should connect more to citizens and refrain from setting political agendas.

Farm journals were a major source of agricultural information in the 19th century. North Carolina published thirteen journals of the 500 publications produced nationwide before 1870. The author discusses these titles and their circulation across the state and nation, topics of discussion within such publications, and the readership of such papers.
