Abstract:
Headlines about queer youth often highlight stories of bullying and teen suicide. However, there are positive stories of teens coming out earlier and creating Gay-Straight Alliances (GSAs) and a sense of community pride amongst their allies. Included in this piece are testimonials from nine North Carolinian teenagers.

All of Us NC has been awarded a Citizen Award by IndyWeek. The group is against the proposed constitutional ban on gay marriage in the state of NC. Since their formation, they have organized workshops and organized opposition groups. Part of their legacy will be the establishment of a system for advocating for progressive causes and their impact on queer people and their families in North Carolina.

The Alliance Defense Fund (ADF) from Arizona has threatened to sue the North Carolina Governor’s School program. In reaction, NC Governor’s school has canceled a course called the Human Sexuality Film series and has not renewed the contract of its openly gay teacher. Tanya Olson is now speaking out and questioning why ADF influences a NC school program and likely forced her firing. The legal impact ADF has had on gay-rights related programs and issues and the current situation with the class and its instructor in the NC Governor’s School are detailed.

Angel Collie is a 21-year old transgender man who participates in the Soulforce Equality Ride bus trips. The bus trips go to Christian college campuses around the country to spread their message that gays, lesbians, and transgendered people should be accepted and loved by the church. Collie discusses the many confrontations he has had on college campuses, his reason for participating in LGBT activism, and his personal story.

In addition to convincing loved ones to accept him as a gay man, Ray Warren was convincing voters to not let his sexual orientation end their support. What made becoming the first Republican elected official to publicly declare homosexuality possible is chronicled in his life journey. It has contained challenges common to coming out, with overcoming the challenges also made his marriage to another man and embracing the Episcopal faith tradition possible.
