For the third year in a row, Asheville was the home of a weeklong celebration of cocktails. Included during the week were cocktail competitions, workshops for mixologists, and tasting from local bars, restaurants, and distilleries.

Abstract:

The number of craft breweries and distilleries in North Carolina has substantially increased in recent years. Some brewers and distillers say the state’s distribution laws are keeping their industries from reaching their full potential. Two proposed bills could change alcohol distribution but there is much debate between progressive and conservative political interests.

Abstract:

Stills, once perhaps a stigma, could now be a source of pride for the descendants of moonshiners. This was possible through the introduction of a modern day version: distilleries. Advantages this industry offered included its contribution to local job and economic growth, as well as the common usage of locally produced grain, fruit, and vegetables for its products.

Abstract:

North Carolina has fifty-two distilleries, the most of any state except Kentucky. TOPO, located in Chapel Hill, produces highly rated wheat-based products including vodka, gin, and whiskey. There are also places in the Triangle that produce mead, including Starrlight Mead in Pittsboro and Durham’s Honeygirl.

Durham is now home to two distilleries--Durham Distillery and Distilling Co. North Carolina's shifting laws regarding the sale of craft liquor have allowed these distilleries to open and begin selling their liquor to the public.
