Wanchese Fish Company’s owner strives to preserve the company his grandfather began for reasons that go beyond himself. Mike Daniels, owner of one of the largest seafood dealers in the country, confronts larger challenges like hurricanes and governmental regulations also for the survival of his community and people everywhere continuing the commercial fishing tradition.

A National Science Foundation grant-funded study examined the relationship between these factors: an economy driven by industries such as tourism and defense; public policies; a 301-mile shoreline vulnerable to elevating sea levels and more frequent hurricanes. The study’s goal: predict how culminated climatic changes will impact people’s receptiveness to buying property in counties such as Dare, Carteret, and New Hanover.

Originally a farmer, then licensed plumber and later a shrimper for 32 years, 84 year-old Henry Bryant recounts his career in an excerpted interview. During its heyday, Bryant's boat, "Morning Light" carried 3,600 pounds of shrimp.
