The Columbia Theater Cultural Resources Center opened in Columbia in Tyrrell County in 1998 and is operated by the Partnership for the Sound. The focus of the center is the human interaction with the environment. A featured exhibit is Hunter Jim, an animated robot that talks to visitors about area wildlife. Other exhibits include forestry and artifacts from the ESTELLE RANDALL, a ship which burned and sank in 1910 while docked in Columbia.

The small-town persona of the past included Main Street as the main street and Bijou Theatre. For Columbia, the cinema on the corner of Main and Elm Streets provided a major source of entertainment and helped define the way of life in the small town. Seven days a week, three times a day, and for nearly fifty years, the Columbia Theatre became a landmark in the community and backdrop for many locals on life’s stage.

This article features the Columbia Theatre Cultural Resource Center, located in the old Columbia Theatre in Columbia, Tyrrell County. Created in 1996, the museum is a part of the Partnership for the Sounds. The museum houses artifacts from various occupations that once existed in the Albemarle Sound region.
