A purported decline in overall paper use has not hurt business for Evergreen Packaging of Canton. The paper mill, established in the early 1900s, has a prominent place in the community, partly due to it being the county’s largest private employer. The business proves its keeping pace with the current ecologically conscious cultural climate through initiatives such as the coating on the material for its cup paperboard.

As a graduate student, the author initiated the Caffe Lena History Project to document the story of the renowned coffeehouse with a legendary reputation. Arem began to explore the evolution and impact of the café as a vehicle for cultural transmission, examining its existence and growth within the realm of American folk cultural production and its participation in the countercultural movement of the 1960s.

Many of the state's migratory songbirds that summer here and winter in Latin America are declining in numbers. Loss of tropical forests is one factor. Another is the change in the way coffee is grown. With the loss of forests over the last two decades, many birds moved into shaded coffee plantations where coffee plants are grown beneath the trees. Now many farmers are growing high-yield coffee varieties that need sunlight. Almost half of northern Latin America's coffee plantations have converted from shade to sun as of 1990, further reducing songbird habitats.
