In the national movement to improve care and services for children with emotional issues, East Carolina University researchers are leading the way through a project called Pitt Edgecombe Nash-Public Academic Liaison (PEN-PAL). The project brings together multi-agency service providers, communities, and families for a seamless system of care for over 400 children who suffer with issues such as attention deficit disorder, anxiety, depression, and oppositional defiant disorder.

Crawdads or crayfish are common in North Carolina but the streams and creeks in which they live are facing a number of stresses. According to the author, the lack of children playing outside and trying to catch them is more worrying than the environmental problems crawdad’s are facing. The author discusses his childhood, the changing nature of child’s play, and the current situation crawdad’s are facing.

An important part of childhood, to the author, was rides on a carousel. For Perry, its appeal could be defined in the thrill of the spin and the sound of the calliope. As illustration for its timeless appeal was a description and photo of a three row menagerie carousel in Burlington. As for its timely appeal, that was acknowledged in its being one of just two dozen remaining in American built by Gustav A. Dentzel.
