Abstract:
Between Chimney Rock and Lake Lure in western Rutherford County, scenic highways merge to cross the Broad River. The Lake Lure Flowering Bridge, once a bustling thoroughfare, is home to an eclectic variety of flowers and plants that pays homage to western North Carolina’s natural flora. This historic bridge built in 1925 was reclassified as a pedestrian walkway in 2011 when a new bridge was opened to traffic.

Abstract:
Work is underway on the World's largest bridge tunnel, spanning the Chesapeake Bay with 17.5 miles of steel and concrete. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel will link the Eastern Shore of Virginia with Norfolk mainland, removing the last of the major water barriers that have historically kept communities on Tidewater's many peninsulas apart. It will thus be an asset for North Carolina, providing easier access from the Mid-Atlantic to the Carolina coast.

Abstract:
One of the state's earliest bridges was constructed near Hertford in the 1780s. Citizens of the town wished to cross the Perquimans River to visit Elizabeth City and Virginia destinations. The man hired for the job was Mr. Perry who traversed the river that was 20 feet deep and 600 feet wide with old whiskey barrels lashed together. A more modern bridge replaced the whiskey barrels in 1885 and finally a steel and concrete bridge was erected in 1928.
