Abstract:
The town of Brevard and the quality of music that is produced there every summer is profiled. The Whittington-Pfohl Auditorium and Brevard Music Center hosts more than 80 concerts over the summer, many of them free to the public. Students come from all over the country to study and perform with renowned musicians here. The music scene and its importance to the area are detailed.

During the summer, the North Carolina town of Brevard becomes alive with the sound of music. For seven weeks, dozens of concerts are put on by a variety of musicians, from classical to bluegrass, many of which are conducted outside. A camp for music students coincides with the festival.

The sixth annual Brevard Music Festival occurred in August and featured concert programming, lectures, and folk music from an array of talents. Located at the Transylvania Music Camp in western north Carolina, the Festival featured national known singers and folklorists, as well as music from the 150 young musicians who study at the Camp.

In the town of Brevard, located in Transylvania County, the whole community participates in the Halloween spirit. Orange and black colors decorate the downtown areas. Merchants put up elaborate window decorations. Cornstalks, pumpkins, and scarecrows appear all over the town, and citizens put ghostly displays in their yards. For the past quarter of a century, October has culminated in a community celebration called the Halloweenfest.

The Brevard Music Center in Transylvania County calls itself “The Summer Cultural Center of the South.” The center is an international summer institute and festival enrolling thousands of students who participate in orchestra, ballet, dance, and opera. This article discusses development, financing, and plans for improvement at the music center.
