Estate auctions and auction house sales are the two most popular kinds of furniture auctions in North Carolina communities. The two auctions can be differentiated by their source of goods and by their location, but it is the auctioneer who gives the sale character. Auctioneers must be able to control the auction to everyone’s satisfaction, and possess a knowledge of value.

North Carolina native L.A. (Speed) Riggs was the American Tobacco Company auctioneer who became the “Voice of Lucky Strike” cigarettes on radio and television commercials for more than three decades. The Tobacco History Corporation and Duke Homestead recently sponsored an event in honor of Riggs and had a display of Riggs’ lifetime collection of auctioneering memorabilia. Now 75 years old, Riggs stays busy with his charity work and nationwide tours.

Forrest Mendenhall has 48 years' experience as a professional auctioneer. He also has a North Carolina state auctioneering championship title and has been inducted into the state and national halls of fame for auctioneers. He is the founder of the Mendenhall School of Auctioneering in High Point, which over the past 33 years, has graduated hundreds of first-rate auctioneers.
