In an effort to balance its agricultural economy, Anson is now tinged with the trappings of modern industry. Anson County's 211-year history includes dissent, border disputes, and battles.

In March 2020, Walmart closed its Wadesboro and another in Lumberton putting some 300 people out of work. Parson's Rexall Drugs and Little & Co. Hardware managed to survive Walmart's lengthy presence in their community Retail experts explain the closings as a strategy of Walmart now being less interested in dominating brick-and-mortar sites and more concentrated on e-commerce.
