A local food processing facility contributes to the organic food trend. Part of a trend that emerged during the 1980s, products such as non-meat proteins, organic chocolate, and Buchi kombucha originated in this facility. Also known for the homemade fruit spreads produced by Walter and Wendy Harrill, who rent their space, it is a product of a nonprofit partnership. Asheville-Buncombe Technical College, the state Department of Agriculture, and an economic development group founded the facility in 2005.

North Carolina spends some money on advertising in national publications, but the majority of state advertising is free as the result of the stimulation of interest by the News Bureau of the Department of Conservation and Development. The advertising brings writers, publishers, and tourists to the state.

The first quarter of 1957 showed busy three months for the advertising division of the North Carolina Department of Conservation and Development. The division serviced over 49,000 tourist inquiries, distributed over 304,000 copies of promotional literature, produce over 1059 pictures and showed 183 movies, produced 22 radio or TV shows, released 34 news features, and made 54 displays for conventions.
