Abstract:
There have been several variations of the tale of the first flight made by the Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk. Here is an account from the event printed originally in 1904 that gives details of the four flights made on December 17th on Kill Devil Hills by Orville and Wilbur Wright.

Abstract:
Manteo resident Marguerite Lyle Drinkwater Booth vividly recalls the stories her father would tell her about the early glory days of aviation that took place on the Outer Banks. Her father, Alpheus W. Drinkwater, was a salvage officer, local telegraph operator, and avid aviation enthusiast. As a telegraph operator, Drinkwater relayed the first message of the Wright Brothers' first successful flight and sent many communications instrumental in the US governments's acquisition of aircraft for military purposes.

This article discusses the various celebrations held at Kitty Hawk over the years to mark anniversaries of Orville and Wilbur Wright's first successful powered flight of a heavier-than-air machine in December 1903. There were elaborate ceremonies for the 25th anniversary in 1928, the 50th in 1953, the 75th in 1978, and the dedication of the Wright Memorial in 1932. The article was written in anticipation of the 100th anniversary in December of 2003.

The Wright Brothers’ legacy is an important aspect of North Carolina history. The monuments and museum at Kill Devil Hills tell the story of the brothers’ first flight, but sites and museums throughout the state—such as the Carolinas Aviation Museum in Charlotte and the North Carolina Transportation Museum in Spencer—also celebrate their invention.

As the author proposed, the coast contained a treasure trove of treats to sate the interest palate of any visitor. History buffs could have their fill in towns such as New Bern, Memorials such as Kittyhawk and houses such as Tryon Palace. For lovers of the great outdoors, there were the Elizabethan Gardens, Jockey’s Ridge, and Merchants Millpond State Park.
