Abstract:
The perception of college cheerleaders tends to focus on female sexuality rather than athleticism. While cheerleaders at Duke University and North Carolina State University maintain the feminine uniforms, they are highly talented athletes who go through intense training programs. Male cheerleaders are also discriminated against, and Duke no longer allows them to participate in the sport.

Julie Shea is a track and cross-country running star for North Carolina State University. She has broken multiple records and received several honors, including the first woman to win the Atlantic Coast Conference athlete of the year award. Upon graduation, Shea plans to expand her talents to running marathons and attending graduate school.

Kathy McMillan is an eighteen-year-old athlete from Raeford in Hoke County. She broke the national women’s long jump record, and will compete in this summer’s Olympics. This article presents a biography of McMillan, her training and education.

Abstract:
Marguerite Weber was the only female hydroplane racer long before the E.R.A. Although it took her some time to prove herself to male racers, Weber won many trophies and was always invited to races. Weber raced under any conditions, including in an electrical storm and after half of her face was bandaged following injury.

In ten years of official play, the UNC women’s soccer team has never lost a game on its home field at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Coach Anson Dorrance teaches female athletes to develop psychological skills and a tough work ethic. The aggressiveness Dorrance demands on the field is complemented by camaraderie and respect within the team.

Asheboro’s Juanita Brookover is a North Carolina record holder in five track and field events, a national record holder in two, and she set all these records less than four years into her competitive career. Brookover also set national records in the javelin throw, shot put, and discus at the 2001 National Senior Games. As a five-foot tall, eighty-seven-year-old cancer survivor, Brookover tells her story to encourage other seniors to try something new.
