Abstract:
The Wilkinson Cabin, thought to have been built by a man named Reese in 1760, is the oldest home in Watauga County. Today, is it located on Highway 421, which was formerly part of the Daniel Boone Trail. Through the years buffaloes, Native Americans, settlers, soldiers, pioneers heading west, and Daniel Boone passed by this historic structure.

Abstract:
In the Appalachia Region of North Carolina, views on the secession from the United States at the start of the American Civil War were varied. For Watauga and Buncombe counties, culture and geography played a role in which side a community supported. Patterns in enlistment show that the higher elevations were more likely to be Unionists because of their disconnect with the slave economy.

In 1963, North Carolinians searched for a way to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the charter that created North Carolina. They settled on reenacting Daniel Boone's trek through the Blue Ridge Mountains with a wagon train traveling from a farm in Wilkes County to Boone. The reenactment became an annual event until 1974 when locals lost interest as national social and political issues took their toll on these communities.

Williard Watson was a nationally known Appalachian craftsman who had a charming personality and was loved by Appalachian North Carolinians. His great grandson and namesake, Willard Cline Watson III, investigated Watson’s life during his college years. In this article, Williard C. Watson III presents his findings about both the public and private life of his great grandfather.
