David Skaggs is a well-known American historian on the subjects of Colonial and Early Republic history. Starting his career in 1965, Skaggs has spent 30+ years at the University of Bowling Green as a professor of history, where he is currently writing a biography of the War of 1812's naval hero, Oliver Perry.

New Bern, with maritime roots, became known as a major shipping port by the mid-eighteenth century. This helped to establish its place in the triangular trade and as the most populous town by the Revolution period. The War of 1812 and Civil War negatively impacted the trade-built economy. In fact, recovery by the 1870s occurred through growth in another industry: lumbering. Concerning its more current economy, industries contributing to its fiscal health since the nineteenth century were also transportation based: railroads and trucking.

Larry Babits’ HIST 6875 students brought history to life from a four-week reenactment of life aboard a brigantine. Before collaboration and studying abroad were higher education buzzwords, they applied both in a reconstructed version of this ship. For them, studying the War of 1812 and Battle of Lake Erie was an all hands on deck experience.
