Researchers are trying to learn how bacteria and periodontal disease are linked to premature birth and heart disease. Gum infections can enable invasive bacteria to get into the bloodstream and cause inflammatory problems in vital arteries.

Abstract:
The School of Dentistry at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill began in 1950 in two World War Ii Quonset huts. Less than twenty-five years after its founding the school was recognized as the best in the nation. Over 1,500 students have graduated with a D.D.S. degree.

Abstract:
UNC researchers are trying to develop and manufacture synthetic blood, bone material, and lymph nodes. Synthetic substitutes could be alternatives to blood shortages, dental implants and bone prosthetics, and be used to create a stronger immune response system.
