The author takes the reader back to the days of the large tobacco warehouses in eastern North Carolina. Wilford Griffin, 87, of the Farm Life community in Martin County gives his remembrances of the opening of the tobacco market. Al Cochran, Martin County Farm Extension Agent; Heber Coltrain and N. Jackson of Hamilton, NC also add their stories to this wonderful article about a way of life that has disappeared.

Peggy Norwood describes her life growing up on her family’s tobacco farm in Granville County, North Carolina during the post-World War Two years. She discusses daily farm activities and chores involved in growing tobacco. She also tells a story about a crow named Blackie, and its role in worming tobacco, collecting farm objects, and serving as a family pet.

North Carolina’s tobacco heritage is preserved at the Tobacco Farm Life Museum in Kenly. It provides a monument to one of North Carolina’s most important industries.
