High Point's furniture and home interiors market events bring in $6.7 billion worth o business into the state and contributes 15,000 jobs. Thomas Built Buses added 300 new employees last year and is making progress on its Jouley electric powered model. Toyota is investing $5.6 billion in its electric battery plant near Liberty.

Thomas Built Buses, Inc., founded by Perley A. Thomas in High Point in 1916, began as a maker of streetcars. In 1936, the company began building buses and today is the world's largest school bus manufacturer. The company operates four manufacturing facilities in North Carolina with a workforce of 1,250.

Thomas Built Buses, Inc., started in High Point in 1916 as a maker of streetcars. In 1936, the company began building buses and today is the world's largest school bus manufacturer. In August 2004, the company opened a new, $39.7 million plant. When operating at full capacity in 2005, experts expect it to produce about forty-four school buses a day.

Thomas Built Buses was founded in 1916 by Perley A. Thomas in High Point. Thomas was working for the Southern Car Company, and when that company went out of business, he started his own streetcar company. When streetcar use declined, he moved into the manufacture of buses. Today his grandson, John W. Thomas, Jr., is chairman, president, and CEO of the company, which turns out about fifty buses a day. Thomas is profiled in NORTH CAROLINA magazine's “executive profile.”
