Tara Dunsmore was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012 and underwent a double mastectomy. After her breast reconstruction, Dunsmore trained in advanced 3-D areola tattooing and founded Pink Ink Tattoo in Raleigh. Now she performs realistic-looking areola tattoos on breast cancer survivors from across the country.

Caroline Hedgepeth, is a tattoo artist at Garry’s Skin Grafix Tattoo in Winterville, North Carolina. Hedgepeth studied art at East Carolina University and became interested in tattoo work while getting her own tattoo. Hedgepeth considers tattoos as wearable pieces of art, and her reputation has grown over the past twenty years.

Alison McGhee and other tattoo artists at Glenn’s Tattoo Service in Carrboro are often asked to cover up old tattoos with new ones. For her new children’s book Tell Me a Tattoo Story, McGhee asked social media followers to post their favorite tattoo and tell the story behind it. Some of them were about tattoos that they regretted, either because the art was horrible or the sentiment behind it had changed.
