In the small town of Sylva, North Carolina, a town-staple known as Lulu’s on Main has been in service for several years. Under new management since 2013, owner Mick McCardle has introduced sustainability plans and customer service initiatives, while his son Devin has incorporated more international flavors into the dishes served.

Many businesses in Swain and Jackson County prepared for potential tourist influx and ensuring economic impact generated by that year’s solar eclipse. From it were hotels offering special lodging packages and hotels in towns such as Sylva anticipating lodging inventory sell-out.

Abstract:
Profile was that year’s solar eclipse, a total solar eclipse in history touted as viewable in towns such as Franklin, Sylva, and Highlands. Included in the profile were other contributions that western North Carolina has made to the field of astronomy. In the early 1960s, NASA established a satellite tracking station in Transylvania County, now called the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute. That institute became a site of research for this eclipse.

Sylva, the county seat of Jackson County, was incorporated on March 9, 1889. It is a community where an impressive number of second- and third-generation merchants carry on businesses started by their forbears, together with new merchants who have helped to reinvigorate the downtown area. Places of interest for visitors include the City Lights Bookstore, Jackson's General Store, the Sylva Tree Walk, and Lulu's on Main.
