Offering a “hOMe” away from home is Oshun Mountain Sanctuary, a Queen Anne style mansion turned country inn style retreat center. The twenty-five room facility built in 1889 encouraged holistic well-being and connection with nature through activities such as lectures and lodging options of sanctuary rooms and country cottages. The nonprofit also promoted sustainability of its 41 forest acres through a partnership with Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy.

Being especially vulnerable to depression and suicide, attorneys were cautioned to maintain boundaries between one’s professional and personal life, being true to oneself, and not overextending oneself physically and emotionally.

The ways in which alcohol use was related to stress and religious activity was examined in students enrolled a Wingate University, a private, church-affiliated university in North Carolina. This study found that students responded to stress by drinking alcohol in large quantities, rather than relying on religion or spirituality.

Inspired by the Peanuts comic strip’s character and his trademark blanket, a nonprofit organization started in Denver in 1998 to offer blankets for children experiencing critical illnesses, accidents, homelessness, abuse, neglect, school shootings, and natural disasters. Known as “blanketeers,” Asheville’s local chapter of Linus creates blankets for children with autism, as well as children experiencing anxiety, stress, and insomnia.

Involving trained animals contributing to stress reduction in humans, pet therapy takes place in in facilities such as hospitals, correctional institutions, and homeless shelters. Examples of facilities offering pet therapy mentioned are Reuter Children’s Outpatient Hospital and UNC Asheville’s Peers Educating Peers and Advancing Health Program (PEPAH).

The handle in question wasn’t part of an old fashioned pump. Rather it, was the stress that modern individuals, particularly type A, are vulnerable to through daily hassles and frustrations. Included as enlightenment for the long term effects of daily stress were studies related to heart attacks and high blood pressure. For those seeking encouragement as well as enlightenment, suggested were stress management exercises such as meditation and muscle relaxation.
