Sandhills country refers to an area in Moore County then known as a resort area, Pinehurst and Southern Pines being the premiere destinations. Though those two towns were prevalent tourist locales, the rest of Moore County experienced a surge of economic, industrial, and public development in 1946.

The town of Southern Pines, NC was announced as a finalist for the All-America City Award, which focuses on improving reading proficiency by third-grade. As one of the 32 finalists, Southern Pines has the opportunity to be awarded access to resources and potential funding that concentrates on early childhood literacy and learning.

Abstract:
The familiar conflict between North and South found a place in Southern Pines, which the author revealed was a Northern outpost established after the Civil War. The event spurring the conflict was the 1907 Blues and Grays Convention. This civil war’s outcome, peaceful, was fostered between Squire Charles Shaw and Captain Asaph Clarke, representing what the author called Johnny Reb and Billy Yank.
