In 1986 the North Carolina Legislature enacted Senate Bill 2 - the School Improvement and Accountability Act - the purpose of which is to facilitate change in the governance process of schools. The authors analyze the bill's overall effectiveness.

Wake County is considering a move to a year-round school calendar. One school is already following the year-round calendar and several more are exploring the possibility. Students, parents, and teachers of Kingswood were skeptical at the idea at first, but now all are in favor of the change. Wake County’s new superintendent, Robert Wentz, also supports the change.

Over the past 6 months, the merger of Durham City Schools and Durham County Schools has gone from unlikely to inevitable. Sometime over the next three months, indications are that Durham County Commissioners will vote to merge the two school districts. Economic, political, and social factors that contributed to the support of the merger are detailed.
