Abstract:
Rockingham County and its county seat, Wentworth, are named for the second Marquess of Rockingham, Charles Watson Wentworth. Although British, he was very popular among the colonists for securing the repeal of the Stamp Act. Tobacco was a major economic force in the county at one time, with the American Tobacco Company as the largest employer. Visitors can find many activities in a number of small county towns, including antique shopping and a new proposed equestrian center in Reidsville, arts and crafts in Madison, and outfitting companies in Eden and Madison that market the county's river recreation. A number of festivals celebrate the community in the spring and summer and include a folk festival, pottery festival, and the Charlie Poole Music Festival.

Abstract:
This special NORTH CAROLINA magazine community profile supplement discusses Rockingham County, a county currently in a state of economic transition. Longtime employment mainstays, like textiles, furniture, and tobacco, have declined, but the manufacturing knowledge of the residents and the county's location near major commerce-ready highways attract diverse industries to bolster the economic downturn. New industries include distribution, transportation, plastics, automotive parts, and tourism.

Abstract:
Continuing his travels around the state, Goerch describes the things of interest he found in Rockingham County. A number of famous people lived there, including three Governors whose homes still stand; Stephan A. Douglas' wife was a native and she is buried there; Patrick Henry's son and grandson taught there in a school that still stands. Reidsville is one of North Carolina's three tobacco-manufacturing centers, and Goerch lists other towns and their industries.
