Hudson and Butts discuss the study of deaths in North Carolina prisons and jails from 1972 to 1976 in order to examine the causes of death; this study is useful in averting future prison deaths.

Maintaining a prison environment in which inmates are safe from physical abuse must be a principal objective of any correctional institution, and the law requires than an inmate be protected from physical violence. This article examines the extent of violence in North Carolina prisons and how violence might be controlled.
