This article examines the development of the airport at Charlotte between 1978 and 1989 through its association with Piedmont Airlines. The airline was able to demonstrate the positive effect of an air transportation hub in Charlotte in the face of public doubt. After Piedmont Airlines merged with US Airways in 1989, the Charlotte Douglas International Airport is still a regional hub for air travel in the South.

When he retired in 1983, the Winston-Salem-based airline was known \"for safety, customer service, and a family atmosphere among its workers.\" Piedmont was one of the nation's largest airlines before its acquisition and merger with USAir in the late 1980s.

At the Wilmington airport on February 20, 1948, Piedmont Airlines founder Tom Davis watched the first flight of his fledgling airline take off. Davis was almost 30, and his airline consisted of three used DC-3 airplanes and 250 employees. Forty years later Piedmont was one of the nation's largest airlines before its acquisition and merger with USAir in the late 1980s.

J. Daniel Brock, Jr. has always known he wanted to follow in his father's footsteps to become an airline industry executive. Brock, Jr. made good on his word, entering the industry as the senior vice president of marketing for Piedmont Airlines in 1972, and now part of USAir operations in North Carolina, after their takeover of Piedmont in 1987.

Seven years ago Piedmont Airlines was a medium-sized regional carrier in the Southeast. Today, it is one of the country's major airlines with annual revenues exceeding $1 billion. Since the airlines deregulated in 1978, Piedmont's jet fleet has tripled in size, with a comparable expansion in employees and passengers. The company recently placed an order with Boeing for twenty-five of its 737-400 twinjets, with an option for thirty more, total cost $1.9 billion.

At the Wilmington airport on February 20, 1948, a Douglas DC-3, carrying a few passengers, took off for Cincinnati. It was the first flight for Piedmont Airlines, founded by Tom Davis of Winston-Salem. The airline carried around 40,000 passengers the first year. Growth over the succeeding years brought the number to over one million. Britt discusses the rise of this local airline.

Thomas H. Davis is the president and founder of the Piedmont Aviation Inc., North Carolina's only airline. Davis, a Winston-Salem native, learned to fly in high school and proceeded to make money teaching others to fly through his college years. After graduation he created Piedmont Aviation, which flies cargo and passengers planes through service routes in North Carolina. In 1962, Davis received permission to service flights from Atlanta to Raleigh.
