Abstract:
Guilford County is best known for Battle of Guilford Courthouse, but other places and events exist and have taken place within its boundaries. Beautiful Brandt Lake is considered one of the loveliest lakes in the Piedmont. Also of interest is the Bruce Plantation, the colonial homestead of Charles Bruce, a member of the committee that framed the North Carolina Constitution, and the Oak Ridge Military Institute, established in 1852. Guilford County is also the home of Guilford College, established by the Society of Friends in 1837.

Abstract:
Oak Ridge Institute, which was built in 1852, closed in 1862 because the entire student body volunteered for service in the Confederacy. On the eve of its reopening in 1866, fire destroyed the school's main building. The following morning, undaunted educators and students made the determination to carry on in a log building with no desks until reconstruction could start. Thus was born 'The Spirit of 66', giving name to a credo which has sparked the development of Oak Ridge Institute for the past 120 years.

Abstract:
Oak Ridge Military Academy, established in 1852, is located in Oak Ridge in Guilford County. In the early 20th-century, the school was hailed as one of the finest secondary schools in the country; that reputation for excellence continues into the 21st-century. This reputation extends beyond the state's borders, with approximately 240 members of the student body coming from 26 states and 20 foreign countries. Tuition is not cheap; the boarding program costs $19,990 and the day program $13,300. Oak Ridge is the nation's third oldest military school and has been designated a North Carolina Historical Site.
