The North Carolina Coastal Federation is a nonprofit organization that protects the natural North Carolina coast. Formed in 1982 in response to peat miners’ plans to harvest land near the Pamlico and Albemarle sounds, the federation members spend much of their time removing crab pots and other debris from coastal waters.

The NC Coastal Federation is asking interested people to help the 25-year-old nonprofit \"turn the tide\" toward balanced coastal preservation and restoration by increasing staff resources to tackle the looming questions on the horizon to ensure a balanced solution for the future of our beaches, sounds and inland rivers. The Friends of the Coast campaign is seeking $3 million to abate \"coastal pollution and degradation\" and to create an endowment and reserve funds to assure continuing revenues.

There was a time Lena Ritter never attended public meetings or made speeches, but when a developer wanted to turn pristine and undeveloped Permuda Island, North Carolina into a planned community of condos and marinas, she and other local fishermen fought back, and eventually Ritter became president of North Carolina Coastal Federation.

The North Carolina Division of Water Quality drafted a response to a petition filed by the North Carolina Coastal Federation to require Brunswick County to obtain an NPDES Storm Water Phase I permit prior to being issued authorizations for construction of the East-West Brunswick Regional Wastewater Treatment Facilities. The petition asks that Brunswick County obtain a storm water permit to regulate storm water discharges because of reports concluding that shellfish closures in the area result from storm water runoff.

Nonprofits like the North Carolina Coastal Federation seek to undo the damage done to this vital bivalve by overharvesting and pollution, which have decreased its population by 50% since the nineteenth century.
