Noted civil rights lawyer Julius Chambers has taken over as chancellor of North Carolina Central University in Durham. Chambers is attempting to modernize the school, and to revive morale in the wake of NCCU's brush with scandal.

Two months after a state audit alleged Nan Coleman of siphoning $1 million from a program at North Carolina Central University, she has yet to face criminal or civil charges. Coleman is additionally being accused of skimming nearly 40 percent of $2.5 million in revenues from a federal funded tutoring program that she also oversaw for the Durham Public schools and other greater Triangle area school districts, and the Historically Minority Colleges and Universities Consortium.

Abstract:
Continuing a distinguished career in education, Dr. Albert N. Whiting became president of North Carolina College in Durham in 1967. In 1969 the North Carolina General Assembly changed the school's name to North Carolina Central University. In 1972, NCCU became a constituent institution of the University of North Carolina System, and Dr. Whiting's title was changed to chancellor.

Neighborhoods near North Carolina Central University in Durham need cleaning up. Many properties in this campus-adjacent area have unresolved housing-code violations, and the crime is not limited to prostitution, break-ins, and drug use. While the University owns several vacant lots in the area, there aren’t sufficient funds to clean up the area surrounding campus.
