Abstract:
The National Wildlife Federation is calling for support of the Endangered Species Act, currently in the process of congressional reauthorization. While some industry representatives would like to see the law weakened or repealed, the federation is asking for stronger legislative protection of rare wildlife.

After making every effort to cooperate with the Secretary of the Interior, James G. Watt, during his first six months in office, and after thoroughly documenting his environmentally destructive activities, the National Wildlife Federation asked President Reagan to remove Watt from office. A poll of the Federation’s associate and affiliate members showed that they overwhelmingly rejected Watt’s policies.

Abstract:
The National Wildlife Federation is trying to stop a federal raid on the Wallop-Breaux Fund and help keep fish in our lakes. The fund is raised from a variety of user fees designed to aid state sport fishing programs. The federal proposal would limit the fund and transfer a portion of the revenues.

Dr. Fred Scroggin, President of the National Wildlife Federation, will be in Raleigh for the North Carolina Wildlife Federation’s 36th Annual Convention and Conservation Awards Ceremony on March 13. Fred is a native to Kentucky and was selected as Conservationist of the Year in 1971.

Doug Miller, an experienced wildlife scientist, is the director of the National Wildlife Federation’s new Institute for Wildlife Research. The Institute will serve as a clearinghouse for wildlife research information and will coordinate research projects.

The theme of the 39th annual National Wildlife Week is “Save our Wetlands.” Members of conservation groups, teachers and students will participate in activities that focus on the priceless and irreplaceable nature of the nation’s wetlands. Programs will emphasize the inventory, variety, threats to, and ways to protect wetland resources.
