When it comes to Blackbeard, Moore’s examination of documents compiled over the centuries reveal the task of truth-finding’s complexity. This comes from the lure of the myth as much as the mixture of facts and falsehoods since 1716, the date of the earliest known source mentioning Captain Edward Thatch.

Abstract:

Edward Moseley and the famous Moseley Map are profiled. Moseley was the surveyor general of North Carolina and created his map to correct the mistakes in John Lawson’s 1709 map. The only copy of the map in the United States is owned by East Carolina University and its history and appearance are described.

Abstract:

In 1733, Edward Mosely published “A New and Correct Map of the Province of North Carolina” after his team painstakingly surveyed the state. Using compasses, clocks, and chains to measure, he then inked then map and sent it to England for publishing. Only three of these original maps still exist today: two in England, and one in Joyner Library at East Carolina University, North Carolina.

Abstract:

Possibly the only survivor of Edward Moseley's vast private library, a lone volume entitled \"Treatise of Husbandry and Gardening\" is housed in the North Carolina Collection at the University of North Carolina Library. Edward Moseley's original collection contained seventy-four books, the majority in Greek or Latin, all of a type that appealed to those of a higher education. The solitary book of this early book collector came to the North Carolina Collection through the Stephen B. Weeks Collection of Caroliniana purchased in 1918 by a special appropriation of the Board of Trustees of the University.
