Abstract:
The health of eastern North Carolinians lags behind the rest of the state. Early deaths because of accidents are 40 percent higher than elsewhere in the state; stroke, 38 percent higher; diabetes, 28 percent; and heart disease, 23 percent. The article discusses the work of Dr. Christopher J. Mansfield, director of the Center for Health Services Research and Development, in seeking to understand this problem.
